Storytelling Workshops for Youth
Engaging Black Youth in the Literary Arts
Our Storytelling Workshops for Youth are designed to inspire and empower young Black storytellers. These workshops provide a creative outlet for youth to express themselves, develop their storytelling skills, and gain confidence in their voices, all while fostering a strong cultural connection.
Objective:
- To engage Black youth in the literary arts through dynamic storytelling workshops, encouraging creative expression and cultural connection.
Activities:
- Weekly Workshops: Participants engage in weekly sessions where they learn various storytelling techniques, including character development, plot structure, and narrative styles. These interactive workshops are led by experienced writers and storytellers who provide hands-on guidance and mentorship.
- Creative Writing Exercises: Youth are encouraged to explore their imagination and creativity through structured writing exercises that help them develop their unique voices and storytelling abilities.
- Public Performances: The program culminates in a public performance where participants have the opportunity to present their stories to an audience, gaining valuable experience in public speaking and performance.
- Publications: Selected stories are compiled into a publication, giving young storytellers the chance to see their work in print and share it with a wider audience.
Impact:
- Creative Expression: The workshops provide a platform for Black youth to express themselves creatively, helping them to articulate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through storytelling.
- Cultural Connection: By exploring stories from their heritage and creating their own narratives, participants develop a deeper connection to their culture and community.
- Confidence Building: Public performances and publications boost participants’ confidence, encouraging them to take pride in their work and their abilities.
- Skill Development: Youth gain valuable skills in writing, storytelling, public speaking, and critical thinking, which are beneficial for their academic and personal growth.
