๐Ÿ“š Reflecting on Our May Book Club Meeting: “What Never Happened” by Rachel Howzell Hall ๐Ÿ“š

Last Friday, our book club gathered for an engaging discussion on “What Never Happened” by Rachel Howzell Hall. With 9 members in attendance, we delved into the mystery and suspense that this gripping novel had to offer.

Highlights of Our Discussion:

Writing Style: We were unanimously impressed by Hall’s writing style, which expertly blended suspense with a deep exploration of personal trauma. Her descriptive and immersive prose kept us hooked from the first page to the last.

Character Development: One of the standout elements of the book was the rich character development. Colette โ€œCocoโ€ Weber’s journey was compelling and well-crafted, allowing us to connect deeply with her struggles and triumphs. Her strength and resilience, particularly in her tumultuous relationship with Micah, sparked a lot of discussion. Despite the challenges and betrayals, Cocoโ€™s determination to find the truth and protect herself was truly inspiring.

Ending: While we loved the overall narrative, some members felt that the ending was rushed and could have been fleshed out more. There were moments where we wished for more detailed resolution, especially given the intricate buildup throughout the story.

Themes Discussed:

  • Racism and Isolation: We talked about the stark portrayal of Catalina Island, highlighting the absence of Black residents and the subtle yet pervasive racism Coco faced. The historical context and current experiences of isolation and microaggressions added depth to our understanding of the setting and its impact on the characters.
  • Aunt Gwenโ€™s Character: Aunt Gwen emerged as a complex figure in our discussions. Her actions, including stealing and the possible guilt she felt over her role in the familyโ€™s tragic past, provided a rich ground for analysis. Gwenโ€™s deteriorating mental state and the hints of her involvement in the familyโ€™s dark history added layers to the narrative.

Positive Takeaways:

  • Setting: The vividly portrayed Catalina Island, with its eerie and isolated atmosphere, played a crucial role in enhancing the suspense and tension in the story.
  • Engagement: The book kept us engaged with its twists and turns, and despite the rushed ending, it provided a satisfying mystery that spurred lively discussion.

We had a wonderful time dissecting the twists and turns of “What Never Happened” and can’t wait for our next meeting. If you missed this one, be sure to join us next month for another fantastic book club session!
