Literary Festival

Celebrating Black Voices

Our annual Literary Festival is a grand celebration of Black literature, with a special emphasis on Black Canadian writers and authors from the diaspora. This festival is designed to highlight the contributions of under-recognized Black authors, inspire, educate, and entertain, offering something for everyone.

The Literary Festival evolved from a highly successful brunch held in 2019, which featured up-and-coming Black Canadian writers. This intimate gathering was met with overwhelming enthusiasm and positive feedback, prompting us to expand the event into a full-scale festival. In 2025, we are excited to launch our first official Literary Festival, bringing together authors, readers, and literary enthusiasts from across the country.

Highlights of the Literary Festival:

  • Author Readings: Attend live readings from celebrated Black authors, providing an opportunity to hear their stories in their own words. These sessions offer a unique chance to engage with the authors, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into their works.
  • Panel Discussions: Engage with authors, scholars, and industry professionals in thought-provoking discussions on literary themes, the challenges and triumphs of Black authors, publishing in the modern world, and the future of Black literature. Panels will cover a wide range of topics, including diversity in publishing, the impact of digital media on literature, and the role of storytelling in social justice.
  • Workshops and Masterclasses: Participate in interactive sessions that offer insights into writing, storytelling, and the creative process. These workshops, led by experienced authors and literary professionals, will cover various aspects of writing, from developing characters and plot to mastering the art of memoir and poetry. Attendees will have the chance to hone their craft, receive feedback, and learn new techniques.
  • Book Signings and Meet-and-Greets: Meet your favorite authors, get your books signed, and connect with fellow literature enthusiasts. These sessions provide a personal touch, allowing attendees to interact directly with the authors, share their appreciation, and discuss their favorite books.
  • Exhibitions and Vendor Fairs: Explore exhibitions that highlight the history and evolution of Black literature, showcasing rare books, manuscripts, and artifacts. The vendor fair will feature stalls from independent Black-owned bookstores, publishers, and artisans, offering a variety of books, literary merchandise, and unique crafts.
  • Youth Programs and Activities: Dedicated sessions for young readers and aspiring writers, including storytelling sessions, creative writing workshops, and interactive activities designed to inspire a love for literature from an early age. These programs aim to nurture the next generation of Black authors and readers.
  • Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony: Conclude the festival with a glamorous gala dinner and awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of Black authors and contributors to the literary world. This elegant event will feature keynote speeches, award presentations, and performances, providing a fitting end to the festival’s celebrations.
