This month we are reading In Every Mirror She’s Black by Lola Akinmade Åkerström, a powerful, fast-paced contemporary novel that explores what it means to navigate the world as a Black woman in predominantly white spaces. This bestselling debut has been recognized as a Good Morning America Book Club Buzz Pick and shortlisted for multiple awards, including the Outstanding Works of Literature (OWL) Award and the Bad Form Book of the Year.
Told through three interconnected perspectives, the novel follows:
• Kemi Adeyemi, a brilliant marketing executive recruited from the United States to help repair a racially insensitive PR crisis at Sweden’s largest marketing firm.
• Brittany-Rae Johnson, a former model and flight attendant whose chance encounter leads her into a life of wealth, control, and unsettling obsession.
• Muna Saheed, a refugee seeking stability, belonging, and dignity after unimaginable loss, finding work at the same company that binds all three women to one powerful man.
The story explores themes of racism, class, power, fetishization, isolation, and the longing for agency and connection. It is an unflinching look at the intersections of identity within a society that prides itself on openness yet hides deep inequities.
