This January, the Black Women Connect Book Club will be reading Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson, the New York Times bestselling author of Black Cake. Known for her emotionally layered storytelling that unravels family histories and long-held secrets, Wilkerson returns with a powerful novel about lineage, memory, and the truths we inherit.
About the Book
Good Dirt tells the story of Ebby Freeman, a woman whose life was irrevocably changed at age ten when a single gunshot shattered her world and left her brother, Baz, dead beside the broken pieces of a treasured family heirloom. The tragedy was never solved, and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a wealthy New England town, the case attracted relentless public fascination.
Now an adult in the spotlight again after a very public breakup, Ebby flees to France, seeking distance from scrutiny and grief. But her past refuses to stay buried. As she reflects on the day her family fractured, she becomes drawn to the story behind the shattered stoneware jar—an artifact passed down from an enslaved ancestor who carried it North generations ago.
What begins as a search for understanding becomes a sweeping journey through family memory, resilience, and generational legacy.
