Promoting Cancer Screening for Black Women

We are excited to share a crucial and targeted event focused on the health and well-being of Black Women in our community. On Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Women’s College Hospital is hosting a cancer screening event specifically for Black Women. This initiative is vital because historically, Black Women in Canada have been under-screened for breast and cervical cancers due to barriers such as access issues, fear, and a lack of culturally appropriate care.

Why This Event Matters

Black Women are disproportionately affected by certain cancers due to systemic barriers and healthcare disparities. According to recent data, Black Women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age and at a more advanced stage compared to white women. Moreover, the cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates are higher among Black Women. Early detection through regular screening is crucial in improving health outcomes and survival rates.
