Dear members of Black Women Connect,
We are excited to announce that our book of the month for March 2023 is Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. This poignant and captivating debut novel tells the story of a family shaped by the choices of its matriarch and the long-held secrets that come to light after her passing.
Set in present-day California, the novel follows siblings Byron and Benny as they grapple with the inheritance left behind by their late mother, Eleanor Bennett. In addition to a family recipe for a black cake with a long history, Eleanor leaves behind a voice recording sharing a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who flees her island home under suspicion of murder. As the siblings delve deeper into their mother’s revelations, they must confront the betrayals, secrets, and memories that have shaped their relationships and their family history.
Charmaine Wilkerson’s beautifully written novel challenges us to consider the weight of our inherited legacies and asks whether we can choose who we become despite the circumstances of our birth.
We invite you to join us in reading and discussing Black Cake by registering on our website at www.blackwomenconnect.ca. We look forward to sharing our thoughts and insights as we explore this powerful story together.
